The Recycled Orchestra

Were it not for this program, these children would be forced to quit school early (usually at age 11) and eke out a living rummaging through trash because there are few other options for the residents of Cateura. The children in this program are not only taught music, they also learn how to build and repair musical instruments. When they sell or repair instruments, they earn money which allows them to continue to support their families as well as continue their education. Moreover, the use of recycled materials in a town filled with garbage inspires innovation and environmental awareness in a community which desperately needs it.

Location: Latin America. Just outside Asuncion, Paraguayans capital; Cateura is the city’s trash dump.
